Solenoid Valves Basic Function

A solenoid valve is a combination of two basic functional units. A solenoid (electromagnet) with its plunger (core) & a valve containing an orifice, in which a disk is positioned, either to allow or to prevent the flow of the medium being controlled. In the main, solenoid valves are covered by the following types of operation. Direct Acting Solenoid Valves, Pilot Operated Solenoid Valves & External Pilot Operated Solenoid Valves. This valve is usually of diaphragm or piston operated construction, equipped with a three-way solenoid pilot valve. The pilot valve alternatively applies pressure to or exhausts pressure from the diaphragm or piston for the operation of the main valve.

The simple two-way valves briefly described above form the majority of solenoid valves used in the industry. Other more complex types in use include three-way and four-way valves, manually and electrically reset valves and a wide variety of special valves.

We recognise the importance of safety, reliability and availability in the automation of process valves and have positioned ourselves favourably to be able to offer an extensive scope of supply from stock for all of our Actuated Valves. Incorporating Safe Area IP65, Intrinsically Safe & Explosion Proof designs from the 551 series of Asco Solenoid Valves we can cover all bases of specification.

Pilot Operated Solenoid Valves

This type of valve incorporates a pilot and bleed orifice and utilizes the line pressure for operation. When the solenoid is energized the pilot orifice is opened and pressure is released from the top of the diaphragm to the outlet side of the valve. This results in an unbalanced condition which causes the line pressure to lift the diaphragm and open the main orifice. When the solenoid is de-energized the pilot orifice is closed and full line pressure is applied to the top of the diaphragm via the bleed orifice, thereby providing a seating force to close the main orifice.

External Pilot Operated Solenoid Valve

Line pressure or a separate source of pressure can be utilized to operate the pilot valve. All of our Namur Asco Solenoid Valves are available for 3/2 Spring Return & 5/2 Double Acting Actuators and come complete with Manual Override, avoiding any complications that may arise from any on site power failures. Pressure ranges are suitable for 2-10 Bar Filtered, Lubricated/Non-Lubricated and Dry Compressed Air for the SCG551A001MS, LISC551B201 & NFETG551B301SL. Anodized Aluminium Bodies complete the design features with NBR & Polyurethane Seals accommodating temperature ranges of -25 to 60 DegC.

Frequently Asked Questions

A solenoid valve is an electromechanical device used to control the flow of various fluids or gases. It consists of a coil, a plunger, and a valve body. When an electric current passes through the coil, it creates a magnetic field that moves the plunger, allowing or blocking the flow of the medium through the valve.

Asco brass solenoid valves are available with different end connections to suit pipeline requirements, including BSPP, NPT, Compression, and Push Fit.

The popular series of Asco brass solenoid valves include 238, 210, 222, 256, and 356. These prodcut series are usually stocked in big numbers in the UK for next day delivery.

Solenoid valves operate using the principle of electromagnetism. When an electrical current flows through the coil, it generates a magnetic field that attracts or repels the plunger. The movement of the plunger controls the opening or closing of the valve, regulating the flow of the fluid or gas.

Solenoid valves are used in various industries and applications. Some common applications include controlling the flow of water, air, gas, steam, and oil in systems such as irrigation, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), pneumatic systems, industrial machinery, and process automation.

Solenoid valves are available in different configurations based on their function requirements. The most common types include normally closed (NC) valves, normally open (NO) valves, and 3-way valves. They can also be categorized as direct-acting or pilot-operated valves, depending on the mechanism of operation.

Yes, solenoid valves can be designed for hazardous environments. Specialized versions, such as explosion-proof or ATEX-certified valves, are available to ensure safe operation in potentially explosive atmospheres. These valves are constructed with materials and sealing features that prevent potentially catastrophic ignition sources and comply with worldwide safety standards.

Stainless steel Asco solenoid valves are available in sizes ranging from 1/8" to 1.5" with pressure rating up to 150 Bar.

Engineered plastic solenoid valves are commonly used in applications such as dispensing, analytical water applications, and diagnostic equipment.

Namur mount solenoid valves are designed to mount directly to any Namur interface and are commonly used for piloting the operation of quarter turn pneumatic actuators (Rack & Pinion) or cylinders.

Asco solenoid valves use seat materials such as EPDM, Viton, and NBR to ensure compatibility with the flow medium. Over time these soft materials can degrade and prevent complete sealing. Actuation Valve have a wide range of spare seals and diaphragms avialable to suit for future servicing.

The life expectancy of a solenoid valve varies but can range from several years to decades. Well maintained valves can last anything from 1 million to 10 million cycles.
